By the early s, Marvin Gaye was very much his own man, making music only on his terms. What Gaye did next, far from trying to repeat the sound of his last album, was to branch out into a movie soundtrack. Here, then, is the chance to reDiscover Trouble Man. Now in full production control and writing almost all of the material himself, Gaye seized the opportunity to write for the movie Trouble Man, a low-budget blaxploitation crime thriller starring Robert Hooks and directed by Ivan Dixon, which hoped to follow in the footsteps of Shaft, Superfly and other successes. Trouble Man was released on 8 December , charting in America on the penultimate day of the year and rising to a No. He made the move to L. Trouble Man had Gaye displaying his skill as a composer in jazz and blues just as much as a soul figurehead, and treating the album and the score as two separate entities. The opening main theme is a saxophone-led, big-band style workout that sets a confident tone, and much of the score is in an atmospheric instrumental vein that certainly conjures the cinematic mood of the day.

As the organized struggles for African-American empowerment intensified and migrated north, the black popular music tradition began to convey the urgency of its historical moment. No one musical artist was as affected by the volatility of African American life and music during this era as Marvin Gaye, whose What’s Going On recording, synthesized the acute issues within black urban life and effectively summarized the hope and despair of an entire generation of African-American freedom fighters.

Gaye’s work after What’s Going On also reflected a radical transformation in the dynamics of the black protest movement as the increased militarization of the nation’s law enforcement agencies, as well as covert State sponsored attacks against the black protest movement’s most progressive elements, helped undermine the movement’s impact.

Nonviolent protest must now mature to a new level to correspond to heightened black impatience and stiffened white resistance. This higher level is mass civil disobedience. There must be more than a statement to the larger society, there must be a force that interrupts its functioning at some key point. That interruption must not, however, be clandestine or surreptitious.

It must be open and, above all, conducted by large masses without violence King, , p. As the organized struggles for African-American empowerment intensified and subsequently migrated north to urban centers, the black popular music tradition began to convey the urgency of its historical moment. The Chicago Soul of Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions, the southern-inflected New York produced Soul of Detroit’s Aretha Franklin, the rudimentary Philly sound of The Intruders, and of course the syncopated political broadsides of James Brown were early indicators of imminent changes within black popular music.

Both Stone and Whitfield would help construct new narrative and aesthetic terrain for the Soul Music tradition–a genre that by the late s barely reflected the organic elements that Ray Charles advanced in the early to mids. While much of this is clearly owed to technological advancements in the production and.

Gaye played drums and piano on the record as well as performing all the vocals himself, in which he sings most of the song in falsetto while reaching a gospel-styled growl during the bridges of the song.

The performances of the song during Marvin’s later concerts became one of his highlights during his s and early s tours. The song was also used as two instrumental “theme songs” on the accompanying album, in which Marvin played synthesizers to accompany saxophone solos from his musicians.

It opened yesterday at the Juliet II and DeMille Theaters, and although it’s a bad film, it represents such a peculiar collaboration of interests that it should be of concern to both black and white film sociologists. Also, it dramatizes such a wild confusion of values I’m not sure it wants to be described as cool or uppity.

Because of the way “Trouble Man” sanctifies Mr. In the most mindless fashion, this commercial film neutralizes not revolution but all sorts of other less cataclysmic social changes. And that Marvin Gaye’s aching lament for his nation and the troubling times of the early Seventies, What’s Going On, was kept off the number one position on the pop singles chart by the utterly inane and incomprehensibly popular Three Dog Night hit Joy to the World. These days however that astonishing, timeless album — which embraces God, spirituality, a fathomless inner yearning, ecology long before it became a buzzword and the social contract between the individual and greater society not to mention that godawful war which was taking out a disproportionate percentage of young black men — is rightly considered one of the greatest albums of all time.

In his excellent analysis of Gaye’s career Mercy Mercy Me, the critic and writer Michael Eric Dyson also reminds us of the sheer brilliance and breadth of the music which both elevates and grounds Gaye’s expansive vision. What’s Going On is rooted in the church — gospel, choral music, the spiritual uplift of ascending chords — but embraces pop, jazz, the blues in a sophisticated reinvention of the idiom, Motown soul and so much more. Always a great collaborator, Gaye — literally the son of a preacher man — brought empathetic writers and players into his orbit, listened to their ideas, embellished his own and then created that breathtaking melange of styles to capture the socio-political zeitgeist.

Gaye’s career and increasingly damaged life would continue for another 13 years — until the preacher man would literally kill his son at age 44 in ’84 — but despite often astonishing albums thereafter Let’s Get It On and the bruisingly beautiful divorce album Here My Dear, the latter inspiring New Zealand’s Shayne Carter in his Dimmer days , What’s Going On would remain his enduring headstone achievement. And the follow-up album was — in terms of the expectations of popular culture — an unusual one, and seemingly a minor diversion.

It was Trouble Man, the soundtrack to a blaxploitation film which — until recently courtesy of YouTube — utterly disappeared.

We talked a lot about football too. He became one of us. They were films made by and for a black audience. Their subtext was a powerful statement on the growing feelings of entitlement and self-respect sweeping young black America. The best music for film is largely invisible, like an emotional breeze wafting through a movie, suggesting and never demanding. They steep themselves in the beating heart of the characters, the emotional adventure of the movie.
